Tom Hastings moves back to his country lake home in Minnesota after surviving a vacation in Florida. While standing on the sidewalk in his small town of New Dresden, he witnesses a freight train-pickup crash. He sees someone jump out of the vehicle just before the train strikes.

   A farmer friend and client of his is found dead in the wreckage. However, the local sheriff does not believe Hastings's version of the crash.
